Worked Examples - another half term with Year 7 - 11.

After a successful trial of worked examples towards the end of last academic year I have focussed on using it with all my classes since September.

My main focus has been writing good self -explanation prompts.

For consistency:

• I attribute the example to a random name ...
  "Megan has answered the question correctly..."
• The prompts start with the phrase
  "Study the solution and answer these questions"

My self explanation prompts often contain stems such as:

• Why would it be wrong for Megan to...?
• If the question was ... what would your first step be?

It's not an exact science and sometimes the worked example needs explaining line by line to the class - but the students are getting better and knowing what to expect.
